Our bodies are an ongoing progression of movement and energy. Thoughts and emotions change constantly and manifest themselves through physical movement. As the human figure moves through space it is bending and unfolding leaving a history of long unique forms behind. Thought and emotion are recalled as the figure traverses these ebbs and flows capturing the simple elegance of motion and using it to create a visual journey of the soul.

I find this series to be a contemporary response to the earlier works of chronophotographers such as Étienne-Jules Marey and Eadweard Muybridge. I have used their studies of movement to better my understanding of how the body moves and also as an inspiration for my own personal works.

I’ve also studied the works of Marcel Duchamp to see how he approached the essence of the human figure. His painting “Nude Descending a Staircase” along with Eliot Elisofon’s photograph, “Duchamp Descending a Staircase” were crucial influences in how I approached my series. The rich, deep colors and contrast presented in my works are meant to be reminiscent of Renaissance and Baroque paintings. I looked to Caravaggio and Rembrandt for inspiration due to the way they addressed the human figure and its emergence from heavy shadows moving toward a curtain of light.

Through my art, I am transforming the body from a familiar and tangible solid into a surreal wisp of motion. These photographs are not only documentation of the body's physical appearance, but are also glimpses at the emotional sensation painted by its movements. The models themselves become so abstracted that they turn into fantasy narratives for the viewer to follow. The physical form of the human body becomes the medium through which the story is told.

Hey!

So I haven't updated my page in a while and I am really sorry over that. I'll be updating again really soon. I am back in a film photo class so I should be able to make some new material.

Anyway,

Not Dead!

So this past Thursday was the grand opening of the Juried Photography Exhibit. Pretty much all of the Photography students at Radford submitted something into the show. I have to say that there are a lot of talented people here.

I decided to submit my alternative process pieces, which are images printed on leaves. They turned out so wonderful! Once I get a picture, of them, I'll post them up on DA.

The best news was that I actually won a prize for "Green Horizon." I really couldn't believe it! It was my first actual prize for a photograph in these contests. It really feels good and it really encourages me to keep on practicing with these leaves.

In other news, I am currently in the middle of a collection called The "Abandoned" Collection. I may go out and shoot more with this concept in mind so that I can publish a book within a few months. Also, I am developing a few more shots for the wedding portrait series.

So there's my update! I hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

So I'm getting closer to getting ready for my BFA review at Radford. I sped through choosing, measuring, cutting, piecing together, and shrink wrapping 7 mats in an hour and a half this afternoon. They look quite classy. I'm really excited over getting everything ready.

Tomorrow, I need to go back to the gallery to finish cutting mats.

As for now, I am researching Artist's Statements and trying to write my own. I get a chuckle from reading other artist's opinions on these things. Apparently it's a struggle for everyone to explain your art formally. Ah well, I'll trudge on.
